Teeth Grinding (Bruxism): How to Protect Your Smile

Teeth grinding — medically known as bruxism — affects an estimated 10% of adults and up to 15% of children. Most people grind their teeth during sleep, meaning they have no idea it’s happening until a partner notices or a dentist spots the telltale signs. At Augusta Dental in Henderson, NV, Dr. Alan Sevy regularly identifies and treats bruxism before it leads to serious dental damage.

Signs You May Be Grinding Your Teeth

Because bruxism often occurs during sleep, many patients aren’t aware of it until symptoms appear. Warning signs include worn-down, flat, or chipped teeth; increased tooth sensitivity; pain or soreness in the jaw muscles upon waking; frequent morning headaches; earaches; and a sore, tired feeling in the jaw. Your bed partner may also report hearing grinding sounds during the night.

What Causes Bruxism?

The causes of bruxism are not entirely understood, but research points to several contributing factors: stress and anxiety, which cause people to clench their jaws both during the day and at night; an abnormal bite or missing or crooked teeth; sleep disorders such as sleep apnea; and the use of certain medications, including some antidepressants. Caffeine and alcohol consumption may also worsen grinding.

The Long-Term Damage of Untreated Bruxism

Over time, chronic teeth grinding causes significant damage. Enamel is worn away, making teeth sensitive and more susceptible to decay. Teeth can crack or fracture, requiring crowns or even extraction. The jaw muscles and temporomandibular joint can become inflamed and painful. Fillings, crowns, and other dental work can be damaged faster than expected. The earlier bruxism is treated, the less damage occurs.
