The Truth About Dental X-Rays: Are They Safe?

At our practice, we believe you deserve a clear, honest explanation of every aspect of your care — including why dental X-rays are a valuable diagnostic tool and what safety measures we take to protect you.

Why Are Dental X-Rays Important?

The human eye can only see the surface of your teeth and gums. X-rays allow Dr. Sevy to see between teeth where cavities commonly develop, under existing fillings and crowns, below the gumline where gum disease affects the bone, the roots of teeth and surrounding bone structure, developing teeth in children, and early signs of cysts, tumors, or other pathology. Many serious dental problems are completely invisible without imaging.

How Safe Are Dental X-Rays?

Modern digital dental X-rays use a very small fraction of the radiation of traditional film X-rays — up to 80% less. To put it in perspective, a set of dental bitewing X-rays exposes you to less radiation than you’d receive on a short airplane flight or simply spending a day outdoors. At Augusta Dental, we use state-of-the-art digital X-ray technology and always provide lead aprons for additional protection.

How Often Do You Really Need X-Rays?

The frequency of X-rays depends on your individual risk level. New patients typically receive a comprehensive set of X-rays so Dr. Sevy can establish a baseline. After that, most adult patients with good oral health and low risk need bitewing X-rays every 12 to 24 months. Children, patients with active decay or gum disease, or those with a history of dental problems may need X-rays more frequently.

Special Considerations During Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or suspect you might be, let us know before your appointment. While the radiation exposure from dental X-rays is minimal, we will avoid routine X-rays during pregnancy as a precaution, particularly during the first trimester. Emergency X-rays may still be necessary if dental treatment is needed, and appropriate shielding will always be used.
